Some Basic Design Concepts Experimental Design

چکیده
Sir Ronald Fisher, the statistician, eugenicist, evolutionary biologist, geneticist, and father of modern experimental design, observed that experiments are ‘only experience carefully planned in advance, and designed to form a secure basis of new knowledge’ (Fisher, 1935: 8). Experiments are characterized by the: (1) manipulation of one or more independent variables; (2) use of controls such as randomly assigning participants or experimental units to one or more independent variables; and (3) careful observation or measurement of one or more dependent variables. The first and second characteristics—manipulation of an independent variable and the use of controls such as randomization—distinguish experiments from other research strategies. The emphasis on experimentation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as a way of establishing causal relationships marked the emergence of modern science from its roots in natural philosophy (Hacking, 1983). According to nineteenth-century philosophers, a causal relationship exists: (1) if the cause precedes the effect; (2) whenever the cause is present, the effect occurs; and (3) the cause must be present for the effect to occur. Carefully designed and executed experiments continue to be one of science’s most powerful methods for establishing causal relationships.

Veterinarians and dairy nutrition management: basic concepts and design-it-yourself—a veterinary-oriented ration evaluation program
Veterinarians increasingly play a major contributory role in dairy practice and management. Withincreasing importance of economical pressures, bioenvironmental limits and increasing demand for higherquality products, veterinarians are more involved in nutrition management and advice, both from aneconomical view of productivity and preventive aspects of veterinary medicine. The concept of food a...
متن کاملOn the Role of Basic Design Concepts in Behaviour Structuring
This paper presents some basic design concepts for the design of open distributed systems. These concepts should form the basis for the development of effective design methodologies. The paper discusses how design concepts, such as interaction, action and causality relation, can be used for modelling and structuring behaviours of functional entities in a distributed environment. The paper also ...
متن کاملA Basic Design Model for Service-Oriented Design
SYNOPSIS This document provides a basic design model for service-oriented design. A basic design model is a design model that addresses all concepts in a particular domain, in our case enterprise services, and unifies concepts that are similar. We show that our basic design model is expressive enough to address the concepts from the different viewpoints in web-service development, specifically:...
متن کاملFunction and form relationships : a basis for preliminary design
During preliminary design, designers must evaluate the relative merits of many alternative concepts. Experienced designers are able to reason about basic relationships between the physical structure of alternatives and performance of a device and can therefore eliminate many alternatives without the need for design detailing. Such formfunction relations exist for individual components and devic...
متن کاملMolecular-Scale Electronics
A review of nonequilibrium electronic transport in molecules and molecular-scale synthetic systems is given. Although the basic concepts and mechanisms for electronic conduction in polymers have been discussed for some time, recently developed experimental techniques provide systems for their validation. New fabrication techniques that create metallic contacts to a small number of conjugated or...
متن کاملPosition Statement: Testing in a VLSI Design Course
I’ve believed for a long time that testing concepts are important to VLSI design. That’s why I included testing concepts in my book Modern VLSI Design [Wol98]. In our VLSI course at Princeton, I try to cover testing concepts at each level of the design hierarchy: basic stuck-at fault models and combinational test generation when we talk about combinational logic; sequential test generation when...
